When your shirts stop fitting over your growing bump and you can’t fasten your jeans anymore, it’s time to think about maternity clothes. Here are some maternity capsule wardrobe ideas for new moms.
I’m definitely not what you would call “gifted” in the fashion department. I work from home, take care of my toddler and baby, and business casual clothing is a thing of the past for me. Personally, I stick to basics and comfy clothes.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
Have you heard of a capsule wardrobe? I first read about capsule wardrobes about five years ago and was intrigued. A capsule wardrobe is a system of choosing a set number of items to wear for a season. For example, for the Fall season, you might have five shirts, three pants, three pairs of shoes, two sweaters, two dresses, and some accessories to choose from to wear. You’ll only pull your clothes from this “capsule”.
The idea of a “capsule wardrobe” also works for any closet. Some women have a work capsule wardrobe. Others choose a capsule for the particular season – winter, spring, summer, and fall. Some give themselves specific rules and boundaries.
I think having a maternity capsule is a genius idea to keep things simple and streamlined. Maternity clothing is worn for such a limited time that having a capsule can help you choose your pieces and stick to them for the season.
How to build a maternity capsule wardrobe
First, determine what seasons you’ll need maternity clothing. Typically, women who are pregnant for the first time, don’t start showing until about 18-20 weeks along. It’s common for second and third time moms to start showing much earlier, like 14-16 weeks along.
Second, figure out what types of maternity clothing you’ll need. Will you need maternity clothing for work? What kind of dress code does your job require? Will you only need casual or lounging maternity clothing?
Third, look at your calendar for special occasions. Will you need maternity clothes for your baby shower, an anniversary, a birthday, or other special occasion? It’s helpful to know when you might need special pieces depending on when special occasions occur.
In my case, I was pregnant with my first born through the spring and early summer, as he was born in June. With my second, I was pregnant through spring and all of summer, with her being due in October. Even if I had held on to my maternity clothes from my first pregnancy, I would need to purchase some new items because I was pregnant at different times of the year.
For my second pregnancy, I determined that I would need to find tanks and short sleeved shirts, as well as some pairs of shorts to make it through the long, hot, Texas summer.

When do you start wearing maternity clothes?
Every pregnancy is different, and it will definitely depend on your personal situation. However, many expectant moms start wearing maternity clothes during the second trimester, somewhere between 18-20 weeks. It just depends; some moms start wearing maternity clothes sooner, some start later.
Sooner or later, you will need some kind of maternity clothes. One thing I’ve learned is that they can add up! Check out my post for Collin County Moms about finding secondhand and gently used maternity clothes.
Other great places to shop for maternity clothes include Target, Kohl’s, and Motherhood Maternity.
